Historic NBA Matchup: 45+45! A First Since Iverson vs. Shaq /VIDEO/

Cade Cunningham scored a franchise playoff-record 45 points, including a step-back jumper with 32 seconds left, as the top-seeded Detroit Pistons defeated the eighth-seeded Orlando Magic 116-109 on Wednesday night. This Game 5 victory in the first-round series prevented Detroit's elimination.

Orlando now holds a 3-2 series lead and will have a second opportunity to advance on their home court Friday night. With this loss, the Magic's franchise record in Game 5s on the road drops to 0-10.

Detroit never trailed, building a 15-point lead early in the final quarter. The Magic mounted another surge, cutting the deficit to three points after Paolo Banchero's sixth three-pointer with 1:09 remaining. Banchero matched Cunningham with 45 points, also a career playoff high, but missed 7 of 12 free throws.

The Pistons are hoping to rally from the brink, much like they did against the Magic over two decades ago. Detroit's comeback in 2003, when the top-seeded Pistons faced the eighth-seeded Orlando, marked the first of seven instances this century where NBA teams overturned a 3-1 deficit. The Denver Nuggets were the last team to achieve this in 2020, becoming the first franchise in the league to do so twice in a single playoff run.

Magic forward Franz Wagner was sidelined due to a right calf injury. He scored 19 points in just over two quarters before exiting late in the third period on Monday night, and averaged nearly 17 points and 5.5 rebounds in the first four games of the series.

Cunningham shot 13-of-23 from the field, hitting a career-high five playoff three-pointers, and was perfect from the free-throw line (14-of-14). This proved to be a crucial difference in his duel with Banchero, who is also a former No. 1 overall draft pick.

Tobias Harris contributed 23 points for the Pistons, All-Star center Jalen Duren broke out of his slump with 12 points and nine rebounds, while Duncan Robinson also added 12 points.

Anthony Black recorded a playoff career-high 19 points, Desmond Bane scored 18, and Jalen Suggs added 10 points for the Magic.

The Pistons played with a high degree of urgency from the outset, after appearing sluggish or disjointed in previous game starts. Detroit held a 17-point lead in the second quarter, but the Magic trimmed the deficit to six points by halftime. Orlando closed to within two points early in the third quarter, but Cunningham's fifth three-pointer late in that period helped the Pistons enter the final frame with an 89-79 advantage.

Historic Performance

The only other instance where opposing players each scored 45 or more points in a playoff game occurred in 2020: Jamal Murray (50) and Donovan Mitchell (51), in Game 4 of the first round between the Nuggets and Jazz.

This marks only the second game in which two former No. 1 overall draft picks have each scored 40 or more points against each other in the same contest. The first time: Allen Iverson and Shaquille O'Neal in Game 1 of the 2001 NBA Finals.
