The Croatian center, for years one of the team's most recognizable faces, admitted that his trade to Indiana deeply affected him, stirring emotions more intense than he could have imagined.
Zubac spent eight seasons with the Clippers, making him one of the longest-tenured players in their locker room. During the last transfer window, the club sent him to Indiana, receiving Bennedict Mathurin and Isaiah Jackson in return. In an interview with "ClutchPoints," the Croatian international revealed the profound impact the situation had on him.
It was tough when Lawrence Frank called me and told me it was happening, and then while I was on the phone with the Pacers' people, going through all of it. That's when it hit me that the Clippers were going on a road trip, so I thought it would be good to go there. I called Lawrence, and he told me I could come whenever I wanted.Ivica Zubac
He also described his farewell to the club staff.
I went there and found a lot of people before they left for their trip. We sat for five or six hours, I don't even know how long, talking about memories, everything we had done and been through. Many people were crying. I cried too. It was tough, man. It was tough. You always think it could happen – trades and all that – but you never actually expect it to happen, you don't want it to happen. When it did, it was really hard.Ivica Zubac
Zubac left a significant mark during his time with the Clippers. In 513 regular-season games over eight years, he averaged 11.4 points, 9.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and one steal per game, making him a pivotal player in the Los Angeles team's paint.
"I Still Can't Believe I'll Be Playing Against Them"
In early March, he returned to Los Angeles, this time as an Indiana player, when the Pacers visited. He was greeted with a special video tribute dedicated to his years with the club, and Clippers staff further decorated his locker. Zubac didn't hide how much the relationship he built with the fans meant to him.
Clippers fans are incredible. They embraced me when I was young, always supported me, even when I wasn't playing well. They always had my back, always believed in me, and they are some of the best fans in the world. As I've said before, it's not the biggest fanbase, but it's certainly a very proud one that knows how to appreciate its players. They've been through a lot, many misfortunes and bad luck in various seasons, yet they still come to every game and support you. They are truly genuine, and I felt great with them. I still can't believe I'll be playing against them in the future. They are my people for life, for sure.Ivica Zubac
