Former Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has heaped praise on Mercedes young sensation Kimi Antonelli for his stellar performances during the 2026 Formula 1 season. According to the Austrian, the Italian driver has completely outclassed his teammate George Russell. Holding a commanding lead of over 100 points atop the standings, Antonelli is on the brink of capturing his maiden world championship, with the title potentially being sealed this weekend at the United States Grand Prix.
The Mercedes prodigy is enjoying an extraordinary sophomore campaign in the sport, following a string of early-season victories that established him as the benchmark. While Russell kicked off the year with a win in Australia, the Briton has since struggled to match his teammate's blistering pace and consistency.
Speaking to Austrian outlet OE24, Marko expressed his admiration for Antonelli's development, highlighting his ability to blend sheer speed with far greater maturity and poise compared to his rookie season:
"It is fantastic to watch how this young lad makes the car fly, and the sheer joy with which he celebrates his success. He is blisteringly fast, and whenever a win is out of reach, he maximizes his result and bags the best possible finish. Last year he lacked consistency and made a few errors, but this season he has completely eclipsed Russell. He has simply outdriven him."
Marko's assessment follows a relentless run of form from Antonelli, who clinched four consecutive victories earlier in the year. Russell, on the other hand, was plagued by reliability setbacks that cost him crucial points. The Briton's costly retirement at the Canadian Grand Prix proved particularly damaging, allowing Antonelli to extend his advantage to 43 points.
By September, the gap had widened significantly. Antonelli's sensational charge to victory at Monza from 19th on the grid left Russell 66 points adrift, despite the British driver coming home in second place.
Following the Italian Grand Prix, Russell openly conceded his teammate's superiority:
"Kimi is in full control of the championship and fully deserves to be in front. Personally, I'm not even thinking about turning the title fight around anymore. My focus is purely on taking it race by race and extracting the absolute maximum from every single weekend."
Antonelli's third-place finish in Singapore stretched his lead over Russell to 102 points, handing him his first mathematical opportunity to wrap up the world title in Austin.
The exact scenarios for sealing the title early remain dependent on the finalized 2026 calendar, amid uncertainty surrounding the Qatar and Abu Dhabi rounds due to the geopolitical situation in the Middle East.
Should both races go ahead as scheduled, Antonelli will be crowned champion in Austin with a victory at the United States Grand Prix, provided Russell finishes ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton does not finish higher than fifth.
If Qatar and Abu Dhabi are canceled and replaced by just a single additional round at Imola, only five races will remain following Austin. Under that scenario, Antonelli would simply need to avoid losing more than two points to Russell, 11 to Hamilton, and 19 to Max Verstappen. Any victory would guarantee him the crown, while a second or third-place finish ahead of Russell would also be enough.
A title victory for Antonelli would end a lengthy drought for Italian motorsport, as the nation has not had a Formula 1 Drivers' World Champion since Alberto Ascari's triumph in 1953.
