Heavy schedule takes its toll despite vital win as Liverpool star suffers injury relapse

Liverpool face an indefinite spell without Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai after he suffered a recurrence of a hamstring injury during Saturday's 2-1 Premier League win at Brentford. Manager Andoni Iraola also confirmed that defender Jeremie Frimpong will be sidelined for a period.

Szoboszlai had already missed Liverpool's previous two matches through injury before returning to the starting line-up against Brentford, but his comeback lasted just 32 minutes. Frimpong was introduced at half-time, but he too was forced off early due to a fitness issue.

"We find ourselves in a very tricky situation. We played away in the Champions League two days ago, got back late at night, and probably didn't have enough time to recover. You have to make decisions between players who have featured in two games and are completely exhausted, and those returning from injury when you aren't sure if they're 100 percent ready," Iraola said, as quoted by DPA.

The Liverpool boss admitted that Szoboszlai's return may have been rushed. "Dominik felt the same injury; it's not a new issue. He probably hadn't healed completely, so he will need more time.

In Jeremie's case, it is a new injury. I brought him on because against ten men he offered us more attacking threat than Ronald Araujo. However, it means we will now be without both of them for a period of time," Iraola added.

On a brighter note for Liverpool, Swedish striker Alexander Isak made his return from injury to net his fifth league goal of the campaign, sealing the victory over Brentford.
