'Heartbreaking': Olympic Champion (50) and 'One of the Greatest Sports Heroes Ever' Dies Suddenly
Norwegian rowing legend Olaf Tufte passed away on Tuesday at the age of 50, his family announced. Reports in Norwegian media indicate the two-time Olympic champion was found unconscious at his farm. Despite immediate medical attention, his life could not be saved. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
'Our thoughts are with Olaf's family during this unimaginable and difficult time. He was a fantastic family man, human being, and athlete. He always dedicated himself wholeheartedly to those around him and to the sport of rowing. Olaf was a legend in rowing, with an unyielding drive to find improvements in all aspects,' read the official statement from the Norwegian Rowing Federation.
'Heavy and Heartbreaking'
'It is heavy and heartbreaking to process this sad news. Just last Friday, he was at Arungen, sharing his knowledge with some promising rowers who will represent Norway this summer. As always, Olaf was positive and energetic. That he is no longer with us is simply inconceivable. May his memory rest in peace.'
Tufte competed in seven Olympic Games between 1996 and 2021. He won gold in the single sculls at the 2004 and 2008 Games. He also claimed two World Championship titles in the single sculls. Additionally, he secured a silver and a bronze Olympic medal in the double sculls. In his final Games in Tokyo, at 45 years old, he competed in the quadruple sculls.
'One of Norway's Greatest Sports Heroes'
"Tufte brought our country countless moments of sporting joy," said Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre. "He was one of Norway's greatest sports heroes, a highly successful Olympian, one of the best rowers we have ever had, and a great role model for many."
