Hamilton on Shorter Races Next Year: "Makes Absolutely No Sense"

Lewis Hamilton has voiced strong opposition to Formula 1's decision to shorten race distances from 2027, stating it "makes absolutely no sense" and that races should, in fact, be extended rather than cut short.

The Formula 1 Commission approved reducing the standard race distance from 305 to 290 kilometers. It remains unclear whether this change will apply solely to the 2027 season or become a permanent fixture. The decision awaits final ratification from the FIA World Motor Sport Council.

"I know very little about it, nor the reasons behind it. I think races should be longer because physically they are easier than ever. So, shortening them, in my opinion, doesn't make much sense. If you think about this weekend, we have C3, C4, and C5 compounds, which can practically last the entire distance," Hamilton commented ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix weekend.

"We have many races where there's only one pit stop. That's not particularly challenging. It is a challenge, but they are making tires that seem to last longer and longer. So, for me, there have been many races where I wished we had more laps. I would want the exact opposite – longer races, honestly."

"This should be a sport that is the most physically and mentally demanding, and there are some races that are just so hot that you're on the edge of your capabilities. For example, Singapore is incredibly hot and demanding. Malaysia this year will be crazy."

"But that's where I think you want to see athletes at the peak of their powers, pushing their bodies, expanding boundaries, and raising the bar. Shortening races makes absolutely no sense to me," added the seven-time champion.
