Ferrari driver Lewis Hamilton has stated he doesn't anticipate receiving a penalty for using additional power unit components this Formula 1 season, despite already reaching the limit for all elements.
As is well known, drivers are permitted to use a specific number of each power unit component within a season, incurring penalties for any additional units. The first extra component results in a ten-place grid penalty, with each subsequent one adding five positions.
Several drivers, including championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli, have already faced penalties this season for using additional power unit elements. However, Hamilton doesn't expect to join them, especially after his retirement in Madrid, which allowed him to conserve some power unit mileage.
“At the moment, I don’t anticipate a penalty, considering we saved some mileage in the last race and essentially skipped one race. So, I should be fine,” Hamilton told the media in Baku. “But with engines, there’s always a performance difference between a brand new one and one that’s already done a few races. So, we’ll decide later in the year,” added the seven-time champion, hinting that he might still get a new engine at some point.
