Goal Machine After Barcelona Exit: Ferran Torres Silences Marseille and Sends Message to PSG Fans
The reigning two-time Champions League winner has already netted seven goals in six competitive matches. In the marquee clash of the French Ligue 1's fifth round, he contributed to a 2-1 victory away at Olympique Marseille.
Torres proved to be the super-sub at the Stade Velodrome. Just before the hour mark, he replaced Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and, in the 66th minute, headed home Desire Doue's cross to give the visitors the lead.
The home side managed to equalize through Angel Gomes, but three minutes later, captain Marquinhos secured all three points for PSG. The Brazilian center-back's initial shot from Nuno Mendes' cross was saved by Jeffrey De Lange, but the goalkeeper was helpless against his rebound.
Marseille's efforts to equalize were hampered by the sending off of American international Timothy Weah. The former Paris player was shown a second yellow card in the 77th minute, forcing him off the pitch. After the match, Torres expressed his delight that the Parisians managed to triumph on the home ground of their eternal rivals.
"This was one of the most important matches of the season for us. We knew it wouldn't be easy. The home team was highly motivated, but we handled it and won our second consecutive league game," Torres told accredited media, having also secured three points against Stade Brest eight days prior.
Parisian fans were unable to travel to the match in Marseille due to a high risk of violent clashes between supporters of both teams, according to local authorities. The French Ministry of Interior justified the travel ban by stating that relations between Marseille and PSG fans have been hostile for many years. It recalled incidents in Paris in February 2018, when eight security personnel were injured during a previous encounter.
"I really wanted to win the match in Marseille, especially for our fans who couldn't be in the stadium to cheer us on. This triumph belongs to them. As for the goal, I remember Desire getting hold of the ball and me sprinting forward. I managed to direct his cross into the net and celebrate with my teammates. This precise strike holds special value for me," emphasized the scorer of Spain's winning goal against Argentina in the 2026 World Cup final.
Paris climbed to sixth in the table, five points behind leaders AS Monaco. "We are very happy to have taken maximum points in Marseille and brought joy to our fans. Every 'Le Classique' against a traditional rival is tough and exhausting.
In the second half, the spectators witnessed a beautiful football spectacle. We played much better than in the first half, created chances, and managed to convert two of them," celebrated visiting coach Luis Enrique.
