Giovanni Leoni Returns After International Break

Liverpool's central defender, Giovanni Leoni, is set to rejoin first-team training after the international break. The 19-year-old sustained a knee ligament injury exactly a year ago, making his debut in a red shirt during a Carabao Cup match against Southampton. There's speculation he could make his return to action in the Merseyside club's U21 team's fixture against Doncaster on October 6th.

The same applies to his compatriot, Federico Chiesa, who picked up a back injury during the final pre-season friendly and has yet to feature this campaign.

Liverpool is also considering organizing a behind-closed-doors friendly to provide both players with additional match minutes.

Iraola's team has been performing quite solidly in defense in recent matches, largely thanks to new signings Jeremy Jacquet and Ronald Araujo, who have started their Anfield careers with strong performances. Joe Gomez also recently returned from injury, so the manager isn't in urgent need to rush Leoni's comeback. However, the plan is for Virgil van Dijk to get more rest when possible, which will open up opportunities for the Italian.
