Gil Vicente are anticipating a tough challenge in tomorrow's clash (20:15) away to SC Braga, a rescheduled fixture from Matchday 2 of the Primeira Liga.
Braga are enduring a rough patch having failed to win any of their last three matches, but their quality remains undeniable according to Luís Pinto. The Gil Vicente manager dismissed the idea that the local derby will be any easier, insisting that only a top-level performance will be enough to take points at the Pedreira.
"We can expect a very competitive match that will pose some fascinating challenges, where we want to stay true to our identity and implement the right game plan. Our opponents need no introduction. We are fully aware of Braga's quality and depth, and this will be a good test to see where we are and ensure we keep progressing in the right direction," Pinto said during Sunday afternoon's press conference.
Asked about what has changed now that the match takes place later than scheduled—the original tie having been postponed due to a gastrointestinal outbreak within the Braga squad—Pinto highlighted his side's growth.
"For us, the biggest difference lies in our mutual understanding. Back then it would have been only our second game of the season, whereas this will be our ninth. After making so many changes to the squad, that cohesion and playing time together are vital. I believe we are much better prepared now. As for Braga, circumstances only work in your favour if you focus entirely on your own work; the rest is just scheduling and you have to play everyone eventually. If we go into this thinking it's the ideal moment because of their recent struggles, we'll only be shooting ourselves in the foot. We are excited and fully prepared for this challenge," Pinto explained, once again praising the quality of the Minho rivals.
Pinto approaches this clash like any other, aiming to maximise his team's potential. "We are ambitious and always want more points on the board. Our focus remains on preparing the team for each upcoming match and representing Gil Vicente with the identity we want to display on the pitch. In that regard, I am very pleased with what we've accomplished so far," he concluded.
Also making headlines in recent days were Braga president António Salvador's public complaints regarding officiating. When asked whether those remarks could influence tomorrow's derby, Pinto was straightforward: "I'd like to say I have no concerns, but unfortunately I do, because we've already experienced something similar this season. In one fixture, the opposing team spent the entire week complaining about referees, and unfortunately, the officiating in our home match was far from ideal. It worries me, but I want to believe in the integrity and capability of the referees. Everyone makes mistakes—both Gil and Braga will make mistakes, and the officials will too; that's part of football. My only hope is that everyone remains professional and refuses to bow to outside pressure."
