Giannis Antetokounmpo already has a four-legged rival in Miami: 'They're scary'
Giannis Antetokounmpo arrived in Miami ready to contend for an NBA championship, but he has already crossed paths with an unexpected adversary: iguanas. The new Heat forward is still settling into South Florida after spending his entire career in Milwaukee, and he has already had an unsettling run-in with one of the state's most notorious creatures.
The Greek star discovered an iguana in the backyard of his new Pinecrest home last Friday, an encounter that even required calling in an exterminator. And the nuisance might not be over. "If iguanas keep popping up, I'm probably going to move. Maybe I'll get an apartment. No pool, no grass, none of that," Giannis joked during Media Day.
"When I got here in July, somebody told me they're kind of cute. They are not cute. They're not cute. They're scary. But hopefully, I'll get used to them," he admitted with a laugh.
The situation is even more amusing given the superstar's hefty investment in his new property. Giannis reportedly splashed out around €12 million on a mansion spanning roughly 3,600 square meters, complete with a pool and lush grounds—amenities that seem particularly appealing to his scaly new neighbors.
"The goal is to win a championship"
Following a decorated tenure with the Milwaukee Bucks, where he captured an NBA title and cemented his status as one of the league's premier superstars, the Greek forward is now embarking on a fresh chapter in Miami.
"I feel good. It still feels weird—there are so many new things: new fans, a new arena, a new city, new facilities. But I'm good. I feel like these past two weeks being around the team have helped me settle in," he explained.
Amid all the adjustments, his primary ambition remains crystal clear: "The goal is to win a championship. That is the goal."
