Andrej Vasiljevic, the 17-year-old Hungarian striker, was on Benfica's radar, alongside other major European clubs, but ultimately signed with Hamburg for €1.5 million, plus bonuses.
Germany's Dortmund and Italy's Inter were also identified as contenders for the MTK Budapest player, though German reports had pegged Benfica as the frontrunner. Market expert Fabrizio Romano had also previously linked the Eagles to the young talent.
The German publication Hamburger Abendblatt proudly declared that "Costa outmaneuvered Benfica." While not a literal deception, the article revealed that Hamburg's sporting director, Claus Costa, personally traveled to Hungary to finalize the deal, beating the Lisbon giants to the punch.
"Hamburg has secured the signing of forward Andrej Vasiljevic from Budapest for €1.5 million, in a move where the German club preempted Benfica and several other European clubs interested in the young talent," the same publication reported.
"Andrej possesses a highly exciting and well-rounded attacking profile. He combines classic striker attributes such as stature, technique, and intent, and displays a very mature playing style for his age," explained Hamburg's sporting director, Claus Costa, in the club's official statement.
