Gençlerbirligi President Arda Çakmak, in an interview with Radyospor, outlined the club's plans to acquire Ricardo Velho, currently on loan from Farense until the end of the season. The Portuguese goalkeeper's future is a top priority for the club's management.
The club holds a 3.5 million euro purchase option, a figure the president acknowledges as substantial but justified by the player's potential. "Velho is, above all, an athlete with great morale and character. I dare say he is currently one of the top three goalkeepers in the Turkish league," Çakmak stated.
Despite interest from "European giants and major Turkish clubs," the objective is to retain the player. "We have strong businesspeople on our board; if necessary, we will pool our efforts to cover the transfer fee and integrate him into our club," he assured, emphasizing that the player's wishes would be decisive.
"He might want to play in the Champions League; we can't close that door on him, but our goal is to keep him here," he added. Ricardo Velho is currently in Mexico with the national team squad, stepping in for the injured starter Diogo Costa, and is hoping to make his senior international debut.
Finally, the president addressed the club's sporting ambitions. Survival in the league is the immediate priority, but their aspirations are higher in the Turkish Cup. "Our opponent is Galatasaray. Gençlerbirligi is a team that has always aimed for the Cup final. We hope to eliminate Galatasaray and reach the semi-finals or the final," he concluded, expressing confidence for the remainder of the season.
