Cody Gakpo has officially been released from the Netherlands national team camp after sustaining an ankle injury in the opening minutes of their clash against Serbia. The forward twisted his ankle badly following a dangerous challenge from Sasa Lukic in the 12th minute. Although he attempted to play on, he was unable to continue and was replaced by Van Bommel. Gakpo is now heading back to Liverpool, where he will undergo treatment under the supervision of the Merseyside club's medical staff.
The official statement from the Dutch FA did not provide a definitive timeline for Gakpo's recovery. However, according to Dutch journalist Rik Elfrink, the winger is set to be sidelined for "a few weeks." This almost certainly rules him out of contention for Andoni Iraola ahead of the clash with Manchester City on October 11.
Liverpool are currently among the clubs hit hardest by the international break, as Alexander Isak—who, like Gakpo, has been in sensational form—also sustained an injury that saw him withdrawn from Sweden's squad.
