France World Cup winner Olivier Giroud has revealed that he will likely retire next summer. The veteran striker, who turned 40 yesterday, continues to compete at the highest level and is in his second season with Lille after returning to his homeland last summer.
“As a player, I think this will most likely be my last season. That is why I am savoring every moment,” Giroud stated in an interview with L'Equipe.
His professional career began with Grenoble in 2006. He went on to lift the Ligue 1 title with Montpellier before heading across the Channel to England, where he featured for Arsenal and Chelsea, winning four FA Cups, the 2019 Europa League, and the 2021 Champions League. In 2022, Giroud became France's all-time top scorer. While that milestone was later broken by Kylian Mbappé, Olivier concluded his international career with Les Bleus on 137 caps and 57 goals.
