Following Formula 1's announcement in late September that races in 2027 would be shortened, it was confirmed yesterday that the change will only be a temporary measure, as widely anticipated.
Due to revamped power unit regulations and projected higher fuel consumption, the teams and the FIA agreed to reduce race distances to 290 kilometres next year, down from the standard 305 km. The reasoning behind the shift is cost reduction, allowing several teams to carry over this year's chassis without needing to expand their fuel tanks.
From 2028, however, when additional tweaks to power distribution take effect, Grands Prix will return to the traditional 305 km distance. The Monaco Grand Prix will remain the sole exception, keeping its unique, shorter 260 km distance.
