Former Super Eagles striker Victor Agali denies bringing women to team hotel during AFCON 2004
Former Super Eagles striker Victor Agali has denied bringing women to the team hotel during the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Agali was sent home from the tournament alongside Celestine Babayaro and Yakubi Aiyegbeni for flouting camp protocols. ‘
It has since been alleged that the three players invited ladies into their hotel rooms after Nigeria’s opening game which they lost 1-0 to Morocco.
Agali however, has claimed that the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) lied about the situation.
”NFF Officials lied about what happened in Tunisia, I was kicked out of the Super Eagles on false allegations,” the former striker said in an interview on Brila FM.
“I remember years later Taiwo Ogunjobi, of blessed memory, called me to apologize for what happened.
“Football officials had the press at their disposal and would often use them to put out all sorts of narratives. They didn’t care how if affected the players, as long as it’s in line with their agenda.”
Former Nigeria international Ifeanyi Udeze who was also in the squad also cleared the air on the issue.
"The truth about Yakubu, Agali & Babayaro in Tunisia (2004) was that they only broke the curfew rules of camp when they went to the bar and stayed out late. They did not catch anyone with women," Udeze said on his show on Brila FM.
Agali played for the Super Eagles between 2000 and 2004 and scored five goals in 12 games before the incident at AFCON 2004 ended his international career.
