Beasley was taken into custody over the summer following a June indictment against him and former NBA player Ed Davis. According to prosecutors, Beasley racked up millions in gambling debts and borrowed funds directly from Davis, his former Minnesota Timberwolves teammate. To recover the lost money, they orchestrated an illicit sports betting scheme, with Davis identified as the mastermind behind an operation that involved six individuals in total.
Investigators allege that Beasley and Davis, in collaboration with three co-conspirators, wagered tens of thousands of dollars on a 2023/24 season game between the Milwaukee Bucks and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Beasley scored just three points in that contest, finishing well below his 11.3 points-per-game average at the time. A matchup against the Charlotte Hornets from the same season is also under investigation, in which Beasley similarly delivered an unusually poor performance.
Beasley's scheme unravelled after the 2024/25 campaign, during which he featured for the Detroit Pistons and finished runner-up for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award, averaging 16.3 points per game. However, instead of securing a lucrative new contract, Beasley found himself out of the NBA and was briefly linked with a potential move to Partizan Belgrade.
The legal fallout could effectively bring an end to his playing career, although the NBA has yet to announce an official lifetime ban. Beasley becomes only the second basketball player to admit to betting offences, following Jontay Porter in July 2024, who was subsequently handed a lifetime suspension by the NBA.
