The former Ghana captain brings a wealth of experience to the table.

After a distinguished playing career that saw him feature for German sides Fortuna Köln and VfL Wolfsburg, where he also served as captain during the 2001–02 Bundesliga season , Akonnor seamlessly transitioned into coaching.

He guided Ashanti Gold to safety in the 2017 Ghana Premier League season before delivering a championship win with Asante Kotoko in the GFA Normalization Committee Special Competition.

Akonnor’s international coaching résumé includes serving as assistant coach and later head coach of the Black Stars between 2019 and 2021.

Though his tenure ended following a loss to South Africa in a World Cup qualifier, his time with the national team is remembered for his push to involve more home-based talents, especially during the COVID-19 disruptions.

Gor Mahia, who have won the FKF Premier League a record 21 times, are in the midst of a rebuild after a turbulent season. The club is keen on reclaiming its dominance in the domestic league and making a strong impression in CAF competitions.

Akonnor’s Arrival Seen as a Statement of Intent

Aside from his tactical credentials, Akonnor is also seen as a mentor figure.

His leadership as captain of the Ghana national team between 1998 and 2001 and his role in Ghana’s memorable run to the final of the 1993 FIFA World Youth Championship have cemented his legacy as a figure who commands respect on and off the pitch.

Akonnor’s potential move to Gor Mahia would mark his first managerial stint outside West Africa, and many observers believe his international exposure, especially in Germany and Denmark, will prove invaluable in raising the standards at the Kenyan club.
