Suzuki, who previously played for AC Parma in Italy, has now completed a 35 million euro transfer to Aston Villa in Birmingham. This move makes him the most expensive Japanese goalkeeper in history.
He is expected to sign a five-year contract. There's a possibility the Japanese shot-stopper could become the new club's number one, especially with Argentine Emiliano Martínez potentially leaving.
Suzuki had previously been linked with interest from Manchester United. His father is of Ghanaian descent, and his mother is Japanese; he moved to Japan at a young age.
He began his career at Urawa Red Diamonds and developed into a national team goalkeeper. In 2023, he transferred to Belgian club Sint-Truiden, despite Manchester United also showing interest at the time.
After inconsistent performances at the Asian Cup in January 2024, where he faced racist online abuse following a match against Iraq, he remained resilient. "I don't want this to defeat me. I want to repay them with good performances," Suzuki stated. He subsequently moved to Italy's Serie A, becoming the first Japanese goalkeeper to play in the league for Parma.
Towards the end of 2025, he suffered a broken hand but recovered in time to be selected for Japan's 2026 World Cup squad, where he played all four of Japan's matches.
His transfer to Aston Villa means Suzuki will be only the second Japanese goalkeeper in professional English football, following Yoshikatsu Kawaguchi, who played for second-tier Portsmouth in the early 2000s.
