The news follows Zlatko Dalić's resignation last week. Dalić, who had led Croatia since October 2017, guided the team to a silver medal at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, a bronze at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, and a silver in the 2023 Nations League. At the 2026 World Cup, Croatia reached the knockout stages but was eliminated by Portugal in the Round of 16.

Bilić, 57, most recently managed Saudi Arabian club Al-Fateh from 2023 to 2024. He previously coached the Croatian national team from 2006 to 2012, leading them to two European Championships (2008 and 2012). His extensive club management career also includes stints at Beşiktaş, West Ham United, West Bromwich Albion, Watford, and Al-Ittihad, among others.
