“It’s hard to give a thorough analysis of the deals when you don’t know what they are signing,” Osagie remarked on his skepticism about how the deals Nigerian artists are being signed up for by international labels.

He talks about the ‘enslavement’ the artists can easily get into if they don’t get the deal right and own their catalogues talking about master licences.

On Davido, Wizkid and the likes signing deals with major recording labels, Osagie says the artist has to clarify how he wants to penetrate those international markets, advising artists to understand the core of their business before signing those deals.

The risk of Nigerian artists losing out to their fans back home, in trying to appeal to the international market is also discussed, pointing out Fela, Sunny Ade and Majek Fashek as some of the artists that struck the balance well.
