German Trailing Behind Britain's Hamilton Ahead of Monaco GP

Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg has signed a new two year deal with the German auto company following the line of his team mate, Britain's Lewis Hamilton.

28 year-old Rosberg whose contract was due to expire at the of this current campaign may have agreed to the extension in response to a comment by the chairman of Mercedes-Benz Cars Dieter Zetsche. Dieter, while visiting a Mercedes factory in Spain thought Fernando Alonso''maybe the best driver in F1,'' which suggested that the German car company may consider signing the Spaniard in the future. But the company has said that it is happy with its current line up and does not intend to break it up for the foreseeable future.

Rosberg who won the opening race of 2014, is second in the standings behind Hamilton, who is currently on the second season of his three-year deal.

''We have long term relationships with both our drivers.'' A Mercedes spokesman said.

Mercedes bosses have also pointed out that the president felt his team had the best driver line-up in F1, they blamed the media for overlooking this statement.

Mercedes have won every race in Formula 1 this season after producing a dominant car under the new rules introduced by the sport's regulatory body FIA, for a turbo-hybrid engine with fuel-efficiency.

Hamilton has won four races to against Rosberg's one this year, but they are three points apart going into this weekend's Monaco GP.

BBC F1 pundit praised the contract extension: "Nico's being rewarded for not only helping build the stability in the team over the last couple of seasons but also it gives him a platform to really have a clear head and take this World Championship battle head to head with his team-mate."
