The Dallas Mavericks' front office faces a significant dilemma in their efforts to secure a roster spot for veteran Dwight Powell. This situation might necessitate parting ways with either Tariq Biberovic, Marcus Sasser, or Moussa Cisse, through a release or trade.
According to journalist Marc Stein, the team has assured Powell, their longest-tenured player since December 2014, that they will make every effort to keep him. However, finding an available roster spot is proving to be a complex challenge.
The core of the problem lies in the fact that the three players with the most easily terminable contracts are precisely the ones the club is keen to retain: Tariq Biberovic, Marcus Sasser, and Moussa Cisse.
Biberovic, selected 56th in the 2023 draft, finally arrived in the NBA this summer after a successful eight-year stint with Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahçe. He aims to establish himself in the league and become a long-term fixture for the Texans.
Sasser joined Dallas in July following a trade with the Detroit Pistons. Last season, he averaged 5.2 points and 2 assists for the team that finished first in the Eastern Conference standings.
Cisse, for his part, is highly valued by the Mavericks, who matched an offer from the New York Knicks to retain him. In the 2025/26 season, the promising center posted averages of 4.5 points and 5.7 rebounds.
