The league's chief operating officer confirmed that both Serbian clubs have already taken concrete steps, submitting official requests to secure franchise status, effectively becoming permanent participants in Europe's elite basketball competition.
During an official press conference, Bueno thoroughly outlined plans for EuroLeague expansion, specifically addressing the ambitions and current standing of the Belgrade clubs.
Both clubs have clearly expressed their desire to become franchises. At this moment, we don't know exactly how quickly we will expand; perhaps next season we will have two or three new franchises. The ideal plan is to first have 18 permanent franchises, and then expand the league to 24 clubs, while absolutely maintaining promotion and relegation through the EuroCup.
Belgrade Enjoys Privileged Status and Significant Discount
The Spaniard showered praise on Partizan, Crvena Zvezda, and the basketball atmosphere in Belgrade. While administrative procedures are mandatory for all, the general director openly admitted that the eternal rivals, due to their contributions, receive absolutely preferential treatment compared to wealthy projects knocking on the EuroLeague's door.
Partizan and Crvena Zvezda have been with us for a long time; they have clearly shown they want to be part of this family, and it's obvious to everyone what they bring to the competition. We definitely want them in the league, but they must go through the process. However, they are among the clubs that helped us build this competition. Because of this, all clubs that have been with us will receive a significant discount on the license acquisition process, compared to new projects coming from outside the EuroLeague who also wish to purchase franchise status.
