No fewer than 31 people ended up in the hospital following a severe turbulence that hit an Etihad flight enroute Indonesia.

According to airline, flight EY474 has been going from Abu Dhabi to Jakarta when it encountered severe and unexpected turbulence about 45 minutes before its arrival at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

The plane however landed safely at the airport in Jakarta, where nine passengers were taken to hospital.

The airplane sustained damaged to the cabin storage areas as a result of the turbulence.

In the wake of the crisis, Etihad Airways said it had deployed a support team on site and was assisting affected passengers by booking them onto alternative flights or providing hotel accommodation.
