Esteban Ocon's Formula 1 future is on the line, with the Frenchman left with just one realistic opportunity to remain on the starting grid for the 2027 season.
It has already been confirmed that Ocon will leave Haas at the end of the 2026 campaign. His seat will be filled by Ferrari Driver Academy prospect Rafael Camara, who will partner Oliver Bearman. With alternatives rapidly diminishing, the Hungarian Grand Prix winner has only a slim chance of retaining a race seat, making a reserve driver role the most likely fallback.
Ocon's only remaining route back to the grid appears to be Cadillac, where he is in the running for Valtteri Bottas' seat. According to reports from Swiss outlet Blick, the Finn's position is under serious threat as the American outfit re-evaluates its plans.
Cadillac's drivers have faced major struggles throughout 2026. Neither Bottas nor teammate Sergio Perez has managed to score points, frequently getting lapped during races. Perez, however, is reportedly considered "safe" for 2027 after showing stronger race pace and coming close to a top-10 finish in Monaco before receiving a penalty.
American driver Colton Herta was also linked with Cadillac, but he lacks the necessary Super Licence points, and an underwhelming Formula 2 campaign has effectively ended his chances of securing a Formula 1 debut.
With options drying up, Ocon is now focusing all his efforts on Bottas' seat. Team principal Marcin Budkowski holds the French driver in high regard, which could tilt the scales in his favour. However, Bottas' multi-year contract remains a key hurdle to any potential deal. Should Ocon fail to secure a race seat with Cadillac, stepping into a reserve driver role looks like his most realistic path to remaining in the paddock.
