English Star Jude Bellingham Lashes Out at National Coach Thomas Tuchel: 'This is Deliberate'

Jude Bellingham has openly spoken out about national coach Thomas Tuchel's criticism following England's hard-fought 2-1 victory over Norway in the World Cup quarter-finals. The England midfielder clearly disagreed with the German coach's critical remarks after the match.

Following the narrow victory, Tuchel expressed dissatisfaction with his team's performance. The national coach insisted the level of play needed to improve, despite securing the result. These remarks did not sit well with Bellingham. "Perhaps he just doesn't know what it's like to play in these kinds of conditions (it was exceptionally hot and humid, ed.) against Haaland, Ødegaard, Nusa, and Sørloth," Bellingham retorted.

'Tuchel's Deliberate Provocation'

On the Sportnieuws.nl World Cup Football Podcast, Tuchel's approach was discussed by former international Hedwiges Maduro and coach Robert Maaskant. According to Maduro, Tuchel's criticism is a deliberate tactic. "Tuchel wants to provoke a reaction," Maduro stated. "As a coach, you always consider what message you want to convey to motivate your players. Of course, Tuchel is pleased, but he still wanted to emphasize that improvement is necessary. Otherwise, players might think: oh, it was already fine. That's the wrong message."

Praise for Tuchel and Bellingham

Maaskant also understood the national coach's strategy. "This is exactly how it should be," said the former coach. "A coach must, and we've missed this with the Dutch national team, get the absolute maximum out of his squad. Sometimes you do that by being gentle and giving compliments, but other times you provoke to get that little bit extra."

Important Signal

Maduro believes Tuchel's critical stance also sends an important signal to the squad. "If they see that the coach is still critical and utterly grumpy, it also shows what a winner he is. Okay, they won, but it needs to be better. That's the feeling they're getting with England now."

The former top footballer, who played for clubs like Ajax, Sevilla, and Valencia, then wanted to discuss Bellingham's footballing qualities. "We constantly talk about Harry Kane, but he's also having a pretty good World Cup," Maduro remarked about the attacking midfielder, who has already scored six goals this World Cup. "He turned away a few times in the first half, even behind his standing leg... He's truly in great form."
