England's Ian Bell: Graham Gooch batting sessions aided return to form

England's Ian Bell has credited batting sessions with Graham Gooch as the reason behind his knock of 167 against India last week.

Bell was in fine form as he picked up his first century in 20 Test innings to help England to a dominant first-innings score of 569 - the hosts going on to win the match by 266 runs.

His century also took him past Gooch's 20 career Test hundreds as the 32-year-old showed signs of recapturing his finest form.

Bell revealed that a net session with Gooch - formerly England's batting coach prior to Peter Moores' return at the helm - helped him to his impressive score at The Ageas Bowl.

"We have a really good set-up with England, but sometimes it's nice to have another set of eyes," Bell told The Daily Mail.

"He does one-on-one net sessions really well. He never goes through the motions. He puts you under the pump, which is where you are in a Test match.

"He never gets over-complicated or technical. It's about making sure you're in the right frame of mind.

"As Goochy always says, you should always be looking to score runs, not just to survive. It's nice to refresh that from time to time.

"And if he's available I try to make the most of him for a couple of hours. If I get the chance I'd like to keep doing that."

England's triumph in Southampton levelled the five-match series at 1-1, with the fourth Test set to begin on Thursday at Old Trafford.
