Alastair Cook's men have not won a Test match since last August, and slipped to a first series defeat on home soil to Sri Lanka with a dramatic 100-run loss in the second and final Test at Headingley on Tuesday.

The hosts looked set to cling on for a draw, but the last wicket fell with the penultimate delivery when tailender James Anderson edged a short ball from Shaminda Eranga into the hands of Rangana Herath.

England are now below Pakistan and India in the rankings, with Sri Lanka leapfrogging New Zealand into sixth.

Australia maintain top spot ahead of South Africa, while Bangladesh are bottom behind Zimbabwe and the West Indies.

England will get a chance to move back up the rankings when they face India in a five-match series, which starts at Trent Bridge on July 9.
