Senate to upgrade 2 colleges of education to universities

The move to upgrade the colleges into universities was made by Senator Jibrin Barau and Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

Two colleges of education, Federal College of Education (FCE), Kano and Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri, are on the verge of being upgraded to universities.

This is following a bill proposed by Senator Jibrin Barau (APC, Kano) and Senator Samuel Anyanwu (PDP, Imo), for the conversion of these colleges.
The bills, which were named “Federal University of Education Kano (Establishment, etc) Bill, 2016 and Alvan Ikoku University of Education Owerri (Establishment, etc) Bill, 2016”, passed through the first reading at the senate on Thursday, December 1, 2016.
This is not an unprecedented development in the country.

Under the President Goodluck Jonathan led administration, institutions such as the Federal College of Education, Zaria and Adeyemi Federal College of Education, Ondo, were converted to universities according to the Daily Trust News.
