Poor students in Ogun state are being milked and denied access to education by the state Governor Ibikunle Amosun.
Ogun state chapter of The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), said the recent increase in tuition fees in institutions across the state is an attempt by the governor to milk poor students.
The chairman of NANS, Ogun chapter, Falola A. Olasunkanmi, after a press conference, condemned the incessant hike in school fees which has led to a corresponding rise in number drop-outs from state owned institution.
He alleged that quality education in Nigeria is becoming the sole preserve of children of the rich.
The union leader said many students have abandoned their studies due to prohibitive fees, citing the example of nine (9) newly admitted students of Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) who had to change from full-time to part-time programs because they couldn't afford the fees.
Data provided by Olasunkanmi showed that that the fees have been hiked in all institutions in Ogun state.
The union condemned the tax clearance charge of N10,000 imposed on students.
“We frown at compulsory payment of tax clearance of N10,000 by the students. We do not earn salaries.
While calling for scholarships and grants and automatic employment, to encourage high performing students, the chapter mocked the scholarship scheme in place which only benefits a fery select few.
"Also condemnable is the ridiculous award of bursary to 45 students in an institution of over 7000 indigenes! When did payment of bursary turn to sampling techniques research?” he said.
Governor was also called upon to redeem his pledge of reducing tuition fees in the state by 50%.
