Dortmund Releases Attacking Star from Pre-Season as Barcelona Move Looms

German broadcaster Sky and newspaper Bild previously reported that Adeyemi's transfer to Barcelona was practically a done deal. According to their information, Dortmund and the Catalan club, led by former German national team coach Hansi Flick, agreed on a transfer fee of 22 million euros, with an additional 7 million euros in potential bonuses. The contract is expected to run until 2031.

"Karim Adeyemi and Kjell Wätjen will not participate in performance tests. Both players have been granted leave to negotiate with other clubs," Dortmund announced on social media on the day players gathered for the start of pre-season training. The 24-year-old Adeyemi, whose contract with Dortmund expires in 2027, had previously informed the club of his desire to leave, according to DPA.

Flick first called him up to the German national team in September 2021. Since then, Adeyemi has played 11 international matches for Germany, though current national team coach Julian Nagelsmann did not include him in the squad for the ongoing World Cup. In his four years at Dortmund, Adeyemi played 146 competitive matches, scoring 36 goals, including seven last season.
