News broke today in the NBA that LeBron James will be leaving the Lakers after eight seasons.
The team with which he won a championship six years ago will now be in the hands of Luka Dončić, who offered a heartfelt farewell to one of the greatest players in history.
It was an honor to play with and learn from you.Luka Dončić
Currently, Golden State, Miami, and Cleveland are considered the most realistic destinations for LeBron.
LeBron James is leaving the Lakers
After months of speculation about whether LeBron James would continue his career or hang up his sneakers, Shams Charania and ESPN have reported that the fate of one of the greatest players the game has ever seen is finally known. Yes, LeBron will play in his 42nd year, but not for the Los Angeles Lakers.
Rich Paul, CEO of Klutch Sports and LeBron's long-time agent and associate, officially confirmed the news. According to Paul, LeBron personally informed the Lakers' front office that he would not be returning to Los Angeles, and that they should feel free to plan their future without him.
Alongside Giannis Antetokounmpo's move to the Miami Heat, James's departure from the Lakers is undoubtedly the biggest bombshell in the NBA this summer.
James wore the Lakers jersey for eight long years, during which he, along with Anthony Davis, managed to conquer the NBA once (in 2020).
Despite being well into his forties, "The King" still possesses immense quality, and a race for his signature is now expected to begin. American media report that Golden State is currently the frontrunner, but it remains to be seen how realistic that is, given that the Warriors have already exceeded the salary cap and can only offer him a small contract at this time.
There is also speculation that the Warriors plan to trade Jimmy Butler to Washington and bring in Anthony Davis, thus reuniting the duo that brought the Lakers a title in 2020. In that scenario, Golden State would (once again) form a superteam, with Steph Curry, Draymond Green, Anthony Davis, and LeBron James as its cornerstones.
How poetic it would be for Steph Curry and LeBron James, two arch-rivals who fought so many battles while the King was still in Cleveland, to have their last dance in the same jersey...
Of course, this is all still in the realm of theory, and potential destinations for James also include the San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat, and Cleveland Cavaliers.
Whatever happens, an interesting summer awaits us, there's no doubt about that. This applies to both James and the Lakers, who must now find a new partner-in-crime for Luka Dončić.
