Luka Doncic kicked off his first media availability of the new season with the LA Lakers by playfully teasing teammate Austin Reaves, whom he had beaten in golf just two days earlier. Sporting wristbands crafted by his daughter, the Slovenian superstar shared his outlook for the upcoming campaign as he takes the reins of a revamped Lakers squad entering life after LeBron James. Doncic also reflected on the preseason team trip he organized to his native Slovenia, emphasizing the vital importance of team chemistry.
"There was a little stress getting everything organized, but I think we had an amazing time. We played two games, but the main goal was to bond off the court. That was crucial. I couldn't get back to California since I was with my daughters, so we decided to bring the team to Slovenia. I really wanted to show them where I come from. Them making the trip means a lot. I know it wasn't easy, but it shows what kind of group we have," Doncic said.
Following LeBron James' departure, Doncic stands as the franchise's sole marquee figure, following in the footsteps of club legends like Kobe Bryant, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, and Magic Johnson. The Slovenian made it clear that he welcomes the challenge.
"I wouldn't say it feels different. Historic figures, true legends of the game, have played here. I embrace challenges and it's an honor. Being the leader of this team is definitely a new task, but I've carried this kind of responsibility from a very young age. I feel great, mentally refreshed, and I can't wait for the season to start because it's been a while since I last played," Doncic said.
Doncic expressed complete satisfaction with the roster moves made in tandem with general manager Rob Pelinka, offering high praise for the new additions.
"I really like all the guys we brought in. In my view, a lot of them are underrated. We had the chance to spend quality time together off the floor, and now training camp will help us gel on the court. We have talented young players who will give us a huge boost. We have a great team," Doncic added.
The superstar also highlighted Austin Reaves' continued growth, pointing out that he has embraced a prominent leadership role in the locker room and actively helps integrate new teammates. Addressing the arrival of Walker Kessler, Doncic praised the center's impact on both ends of the floor.
"It's always tough going up against Walk. I really wanted us to get him, and the front office and the team wanted him as well. He's a fantastic addition. Beyond his elite rim protection, Kessler has made huge strides on offense. He's going to be a massive help for us," Doncic concluded.
