Dončić drops 87 points in 24 hours! Luka goes wild against Nikola Jović and targets MVP crown /VIDEO/
Dončić not only outshined Heat star Giannis Antetokounmpo, but also proved that Los Angeles is practically unstoppable when firing on all cylinders offensively.
To put things into perspective: entering this contest, NBA teams were averaging 113.7 points per game; the Lakers had already racked up 111 points by the end of the third quarter. That was just four points shy of matching the Heat franchise record for most points allowed through three quarters.
Just one night after dropping 45 points in a win over the Toronto Raptors, Dončić put on a clinic against Miami, scoring 42 points on 14-of-24 shooting, alongside seven rebounds and 13 assists. Meanwhile, Nikola Jović logged six and a half minutes for the Heat, finishing with two points and a rebound on 1-of-3 shooting.
It didn't matter who Miami threw at Dončić. Versatile perimeter defender Andrew Wiggins started on him, while Pelle Larsson and Davion Mitchell also took their turns. Late in the third quarter, with Dončić approaching the 40-point mark, Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra reached deep into his bench to bring on defensive guard specialist Smith. Miami resorted to double-teams, but to no avail.
Dončić picked apart the defense with sharp, pinpoint passes to wide-open teammates left unattended by the blitzes. By the end of the third quarter, he had already reached double digits in assists.
This is what makes guarding Dončić so confounding: even when pressured, he dictates his own pace, shrugging off defensive focus—almost toying with double-teams and daring defenders to step closer—only to deliver pinpoint passes right into the shooting pocket of his teammates.
This was Dončić at his most efficient. He didn't need to force tough shots; he remained in complete control, never rattled, and elevated everyone around him. By comparison, Antetokounmpo finished with 30 points on 10-of-17 shooting, adding 12 rebounds and seven assists.
The Lakers improved to 6-2, with Dončić now averaging a league-leading 38.3 points per game—a full four points clear of second place. Boasting a top-three offense in the NBA, and with injuries hitting Western Conference powerhouses like the Oklahoma City Thunder, the door could be opening for Los Angeles to emerge as a genuine championship contender with Dončić as their undisputed centerpiece.
