Brazil’s First Female President Re-Elected Into Office

President Dilma Rousseff of Brazil has been re-elected into office after a very tight competition on Sunday, October 26.

66-year-old Rousseff won another term of 4 years after securing more than 51% of votes to beat rival, Aecio Neves who gathered 48.41%.

The newly re-elected president assumed the office in 2011 becoming the first female to occupy the position.

She had previously served as Chief of Staff to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from 2005 to 2010.

Rouseff is said to be popular with the country’s poor folk due to her government's welfare programmes and she stated in her victory speech that her aim was to be "a much better president than I have been until now".
