David Strelec's Club Also Benefits from Astronomical Transfer; Chelsea Sets New Record
Rogers underwent a medical examination on Monday after returning from the World Cup in the USA, Canada, and Mexico. "I'm incredibly excited. For me, Chelsea is the biggest London club, one I've admired since childhood. I'm thrilled with the new manager's project, delighted with the players we have, and the direction the club is heading," Rogers was quoted by the club, according to AFP.
FC Middlesbrough, home to Slovakian forward David Strelec, will also receive a significant sum from the transfer fee. The Championship club will pocket 20 percent of the transfer amount thanks to a sell-on clause agreed upon when Rogers moved to Aston Villa in 2024.
This transfer surpassed the previous record fee for a British player, set by Manchester City earlier this July when they signed English midfielder Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116 million.
Chelsea had been pursuing Rogers for two years, beating out Arsenal for his signature. The reigning Premier League champions had refused to meet the astronomical fee demanded by the Birmingham-based club. Rogers now stands as "The Blues'" most expensive signing in history, eclipsing the £107 million paid for Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez from Benfica in 2023.
Rogers featured in the recently concluded World Cup, making seven appearances, three of which were starts, though he failed to find the back of the net. In the last Premier League season, he scored 10 goals in 37 matches.
