Earnhardt Jr edged ahead late in Long Pond, Pennsylvania, taking the lead with 14 laps remaining and staying in front of the pack for the rest of the race to take the chequered flag at Pocono Raceway.

The win ensured the 39-year-old from Hendrick Motorsports won both races at the Pocono Raceway this year, after he also triumphed at the Pocono 400 on June 8.

Kevin Harvick (Stewart-Haas Racing) finished second, while Joey Logano (Team Penske) claimed third.

Clint Bowyer (Michael Waltrip Racing) and Greg Biffle (Roush Fenway Racing) completed the top five in Pennsylvania.

NASCAR Sprint Cup Series leader Jeff Gordon (Hendrick Motorsports) dominated the race, leading for 63 of the 160 laps, but could only finish sixth, although that was enough to see him retain his overall advantage.

Sunday's race included a huge pile-up in the closing stages with 13 cars crashing after Denny Hamlin (Joe Gibbs Racing) spun in the middle of the field, having clipped the wall.

Earnhardt Jr's victory took him to 740 points in second position overall, just 17 behind team-mate Gordon, with Brad Keselowski (Team Penske) sitting third on 687.
