Crucial London meeting: Only one European giant responds to NBA Europe push!
London is set to host a crucial meeting on Tuesday, October 27, focusing on the launch of the ambitious NBA Europe project. However, despite initial plans for widespread European heavyweight involvement, as things stand, only one powerhouse club is expected to attend the talks.
Real Madrid left alone in negotiations as European giants snub invitation
A delegation from Real Madrid—the most prominent backer of an NBA presence in Europe from day one—has confirmed their trip to the British capital. Los Blancos president Florentino Perez is keen on entering the NBA ecosystem and hopes the transition can be completed as soon as possible.
Conversely, representatives from Bayern Munich and Barcelona will not be attending the scheduled meeting in London.
Fears over loss of control and a €520m buyout proposal
Pushback against the American venture is nothing new among Europe's elite. Barcelona, alongside Olympiacos and Olimpia Milano, previously voiced strong opposition to a proposal that would see the EuroLeague sold to the NBA for €520 million.
According to Catalan outlet "Sport", there is deep concern at Barcelona that an NBA takeover would completely strip the club of its power and influence as a permanent shareholder and founding member of the EuroLeague. Consequently, the Catalans refuse to hand over the reins to the transatlantic project.
