Coventry City claimed a convincing 3-1 victory over Sunderland in a crucial Premier League basement battle. Frank Lampard's side took control before the break through goals from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto (17') and Taiwo Awoniyi (37'), before Jack Rudoni (52') added a third early in the second half. Enzo Le Fée (67') pulled one back from the penalty spot for the visitors, but it proved to be nothing more than a consolation.
Coventry started on the front foot and deservedly broke the deadlock in the 17th minute. Sunderland's defence failed to properly clear a cross into the box, allowing Sakamoto to pounce and find the net with a precise finish from the edge of the area. The hosts struck again shortly before the interval when Awoniyi dispossessed Luke O'Nien, drove into the box, and finished with composure to make it 2-0.
Just seven minutes after the restart, Coventry put the result beyond doubt. Rudoni tried his luck from distance, and his effort took a wicked deflection off Omar Alderete, leaving goalkeeper Robin Roefs with no chance. Sunderland mounted a response and were awarded a penalty in the 67th minute when Ethan Pinnock was penalised for handball inside the area. Le Fée made no mistake from the spot to reduce the deficit.
However, the Black Cats failed to ignite a comeback and finished the match with ten men. Alderete picked up a second yellow card deep into stoppage time and was sent off in the 99th minute. The three points see Coventry climb out of the drop zone with their third Premier League victory of the campaign, while Sunderland remain rooted to the foot of the table after another disappointing afternoon.
