Supreme Court restrains National Assembly from further action

The Supreme Court has restrained the National Assembly from amending some sections of the Constitution.

The suit had been instituted by the Federal Government on April 23 after President Goodluck Jonathan refused to approve the amendments.

Jonathan further explained that he denied assent because the amendments proposed sought to dilute the powers of the President among other irregularities.

However, the National Assembly, in response, stated that it would override Jonathan’s decision after 30 days.

The President had also said that in preparing the amendments, the lawmakers failed to adhere to Section 9 of the 1999 Constitution.
