Confirmed: World Cup Match Heavily Influenced by Referees, Significantly Aiding Argentina
Swiss international Breel Embolo should not have been sent off in the 2026 World Cup quarter-final against Argentina, according to the International Football Association Board (IFAB). Embolo received a second yellow, then a red card, for simulation. Argentina capitalized on the numerical advantage, winning 3-1 after extra time to advance to the semi-finals.

Embolo went down after a challenge from Leandro Paredes, who was initially shown a yellow card. However, following a VAR review, the situation was re-evaluated. The referee rescinded Paredes' yellow card and instead issued a red card to Embolo for simulation.

"In this instance, the mistaken identity rule should not have been applied," stated IFAB in a statement relayed by the Associated Press.
