Colton Herta will not be returning to the IndyCar Series in 2027, despite previously stating he has no interest in a second season in Formula 2, where he made his debut earlier this year.

The American was a regular in IndyCar from 2019-2025, securing nine wins and a total of 20 podium finishes across 116 races. However, he left the American championship to pursue his dream of racing in Formula 1.

The first step towards realizing that dream was a season in Formula 2, which Herta combined with a test driver role for the Cadillac team. The American has already participated in three free practice sessions with the newest team in the World Championship, and he is expected to continue in this role next year.

According to Marshall Pruett, one of the most well-informed journalists in IndyCar, Herta was approached by Chip Ganassi with an offer for a full-time IndyCar seat next year. However, the offer was declined, as Herta intends to continue pursuing his Formula 1 dream in the near future.

Therefore, expectations are that he will remain within the Cadillac structure next year and participate in more free practice sessions. Through these, the American aims to accumulate the necessary points to obtain a super license, which would allow him to compete in the World Championship.
