Close Associate of Man City Admits Premier League Expulsion Not Impossible

Manchester City is almost certainly facing severe penalties following the independent commission's ruling on the club's financial fair play breaches, with potential sanctions including expulsion from the Premier League. Former City financial advisor Stefan Borson described a possible relegation as the "nuclear option" but emphasized that, at this stage, anything is possible. According to information cited by the "Daily Mail," the commission has found City guilty on 114 of 115 charges, although the official decision and sanction have not yet been published.

"Everything is possible, and now real chaos will erupt, lasting for weeks. It will be very difficult for people at City to say anything or to manage the fallout from this situation, especially since we still don't know the exact details of the ruling. We will almost certainly see the independent commission's decision in detail soon, and it will provide ample ammunition for those who will attack the club and its representatives. After that, the process of determining the penalty will begin," stated Borson, who advised Manchester City between 2002 and 2007.

Borson also believes that an appeal will be extremely challenging for Manchester City, as the club has consistently denied all accusations for years and is expected to challenge the ruling. "An appeal on the facts is very unlikely to succeed. With City found guilty on almost everything, the decision itself will likely be very harsh on the club and will address the conduct of the management and individuals, as well as how the hearing proceeded. They will then have to present everything to an appellate body, which will not re-hear the case from scratch and will not have the same opportunity to review all witness testimonies and documents. It will be extremely difficult to overturn these factual findings," he said.

The case began with the Premier League's charges in February 2023, covering alleged breaches over several seasons, as well as claims of a lack of cooperation with the investigation. The hearing before the independent commission lasted approximately 12 weeks and concluded in 2024. According to current reports, the determination of the sanction and the subsequent appeal process are now pending. Possible penalties include financial sanctions, point deductions, transfer bans, and even expulsion from the Premier League, but no official penalty has been determined yet. Manchester City continues to deny any wrongdoing and has stated that the process is not yet complete.
