Rubio has now finally opened up about his struggles, admitting that things escalated to the point where he contemplated suicide.
"One night, I was in a hotel room and I just said: I don't want to continue anymore. Not my career, but my life. There were moments when everything around me felt like a burden, when I thought my life had no meaning," Rubio revealed, adding: "When I look back at my career, I'm never satisfied, because it was never enough. Even when I received awards, I wasn't thrilled; I'd tell myself I was an imposter, that I didn't deserve it."
He also spoke about the pressure placed on young athletes, citing Lamine Yamal as an example:
"Responsibility is shifted onto a child who might not yet be ready for it. It seems as if the mere fact that they play football well means they must know how to handle everything else. Is he ready for that? Is he trained for that?" Rubio questioned.
