Chelsea Owners in Talks to Sell Shares

Chelsea's minority owners, Todd Boehly and Mark Walters, are reportedly in discussions with their consortium partners at Clearlake Capital regarding the sale of their shares. Clearlake Capital, the majority owner, holds a 61.5% stake in the club, while Boehly and Walters each possess 12.8%. The duo has engaged in talks to offload their shares to Clearlake, which is led by Behdad Eghbali and Jose Feliciano. Boehly was the public face of the consortium that acquired the club four years ago. Despite Boehly's prominent role, Clearlake, under Eghbali and Feliciano, effectively manages the club. The American billionaire spearheaded the consortium's £2.5 billion takeover of the club four years prior.

In March 2025, Boehly indicated that Chelsea's owners might diverge if they couldn't reach a consensus on the future of Stamford Bridge. Club executives are weighing options for the stadium, including relocation or expansion, with Earls Court being considered as a potential new site. All possibilities are under review, with reports suggesting the project is complicated by the limited development space in London.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Boehly stated, "We need to think long-term about what we're trying to achieve. We have a significant stadium development opportunity that we need to work through. That will be the moment where we either align or ultimately decide to go our separate ways."

This isn't the first instance of tension among the London club's owners. Back in September 2024, Sky Sports News reported that Boehly was dissatisfied with the club's management and had opposed Mauricio Pochettino's dismissal. Enzo Maresca, who replaced Pochettino, went on to win the Conference League and the Club World Cup but departed in early 2026, with Chelsea ultimately finishing 10th and missing out on European competition. Xabi Alonso was appointed as the new manager this summer, and the Blues have since spent over £280 million on 12 new signings.
