Chelsea has announced a record pre-tax loss for the Premier League, with a deficit of £262 million for the 2024/25 season. This figure eclipses Manchester City's £179.5 million loss recorded in 2011. These numbers are particularly concerning given the club's reported revenue of £490.9 million, which represents the second-highest in Chelsea's history.
Last season, the 'Blues' secured the Conference League title and finished fourth in the Premier League, subsequently lifting the Club World Cup trophy.
The club insists it continues to comply with the Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR), which permit losses of £105 million over three years. The figures used for these calculations differ from the net pre-tax loss.
Chelsea has spent over £1 billion on players since BlueCo acquired the club. Numerous young footballers were signed to long-term contracts, designed to spread the costs over time. UEFA fined the London club £26.7 million at the start of the season for breaching squad cost ratio rules, also placing the club under monitoring for a period of three years.
Chelsea anticipates record revenues in their upcoming reports, which will include an additional £85 million earned from the Club World Cup, plus approximately £80 million in television rights revenue from the team's Champions League matches. Projected revenues for the next season are estimated at £700 million.
