Manchester United manager Michael Carrick described his side's performance against Leeds as a step in the right direction and a fresh start for the team. While the Red Devils were unable to secure all three points, the boss was delighted with his players' attitude, intensity, and collective work ethic.
"It was definitely a step in the right direction. If you have any weaknesses, today is the day they get exposed. Even before kick-off, I felt the lads were ready for the challenge. It wasn't completely perfect, and our confidence isn't at its peak, but the players were trying to do the right things. At times we looked really good and defended superbly as a unit," Carrick told Sky Sports.
The manager emphasised that he wanted to see total commitment given the magnitude of the rivalry with Leeds. "The commitment was certainly there. It had to be today, and I never doubted it. I was really looking forward to the match to see it. There was edge and intensity. I spoke to the boys this morning about the history of this rivalry and what it means to the supporters and the club. A game like this really tests you. It wasn't flawless, but there was plenty on display to show our determination to get a result. We can't get carried away because we didn't win, but it felt like a fresh start today. The lads are desperate to perform for each other and for the club," he added.
Carrick also highlighted a tactical tweak that he felt injected freshness into United's play. "There was a real fresh feel to it. We used a different spine through the team, which was a massive positive for us. It was a subtle tactical adjustment rather than anything radical, adapting to their strengths," he explained. He was also full of praise for Leeds and their manager Daniel Farke, pointing out that they ask very difficult questions and punish any side that isn't fully prepared.
