Aston Villa are preparing to take legal action against former England defender Jamie Carragher over what they described as unacceptable insults aimed at the club and their fans on the Stick to Football podcast.

Carragher suggested that Aston Villa manager Unai Emery would jump at the chance to take over at rivals Manchester United if the hierarchy decided to part ways with Michael Carrick.

"He would definitely want the opportunity to manage a top club again. There is a hierarchy in football whether you like it or not. That is how Real Madrid took Manchester United's best player in Cristiano Ronaldo. Below Aston Villa, there are other clubs they can take players or a manager from," Carragher was quoted as saying by BBC Sport. The former England international then used profanity to tell Villa fans to be quiet, adding: "Aston Villa are never going to be Manchester United."

Aston Villa released a statement on X on Friday, signed by club chairman Nassef Sawiris: "Aston Villa will take legal action against Jamie Carragher for his unacceptable insults towards the club and its fans. Aston Villa will not allow anyone to derail its rise in English and European football."

Carragher later took to social media to clarify that his comments were intended as a joke in response to criticism from Aston Villa fans, pointing out that he has consistently praised both Emery and the club in the past.
